Changing For Good

Mastering the Stages of Change: A Scientific Path to a Better Relationship

Many people believe that transforming a relationship is purely a matter of willpower or “loving enough.”
However, as highlighted in the seminal book “Changing for Good” by Prochaska, Norcross, and DiClemente, change is a scientific process that follows a predictable cycle.
In my practice as a parcoacher, I often see couples fail not because they lack motivation, but because they are trying to take Action before they have completed the necessary internal work of the earlier stages.

The Six Stages of Change

According to the Transtheoretical Approach, there are six distinct stages you must navigate to create permanent transformation:

  1. Precontemplation: You may deny there is a problem, even when others see it clearly.
  2. Contemplation: You acknowledge the issue and begin thinking about solutions but aren’t quite ready to commit to action.
  3. Preparation: You start making concrete plans for the near future, such as researching therapists or reading self-help books.
  4. Action: This is the most visible stage, where you actively change your behavior and communication patterns.
  5. Maintenance: You work to consolidate your gains and prevent a relapse into old, destructive habits.
  6. Termination: The new behavior is so ingrained that the old habit no longer poses a threat.

Why Timing Matters

The key to success is matching your challenge to your current stage.
If one partner is ready for “Action” while the other is still in “Precontemplation,” the resulting pressure often leads to further conflict and failure.
My role as a “Senior Mental Engineer” is to help you identify exactly where you are in this spiral and provide the specific tools—like Anerkendende Selvansvarlig Dialog (ASD)—needed to move to the next level.

True change isn’t a straight line; it is a spiral where we learn from every setback.
By taking 100% self-responsibility for your own stage of growth, you stop being a victim of your circumstances and start leading your relationship toward a fulfilling future.

Forandringsprocessens 6 faser

Read More »Forandringsprocessens 6 faser
